Large embroidered back patches can be applied to jackets, and they are planned with the pattern because a panel of that size has to sit correctly across the back and clear the seams, the yoke and any pocket.

The artwork is reviewed for the size and the stitch density, since a very detailed design at a large size can be heavy or lose definition; a patch or a combination of a patch and direct embroidery sometimes gives a cleaner result.

The backing and the construction matter as much as the design, because the stabiliser used behind the embroidery affects how the panel behaves when the jacket is worn and washed.

Placement and the final size are approved on the sample, so the patch sits where you expect on the actual garment rather than on a drawing.
